SEPTEMBER 2021 VISIT TO BELFAST
Samson and Goliath are the twin shipbuilding gantry cranes situated at Queen's Island, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The cranes, which were named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath, dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark structures of the city.
Featuring a striking portrait of the Red Woman, Gendry’s war hammer and a shadow assassin, it depicts some of House Baratheon’s most iconic moments.
Each trail at Stormont Estate lasts around 30 minutes and are suitable for all ages as well as being pushchair friendly with toilets located close by.
Stormont Estate in Belfast is open to the public and entry is free. It has beautiful gardens, a variety of walks, fitness and adventure trails, a children's playground, picnic and barbecue areas, historic buildings and hosts many events throughout the year.
In 1951 Knox was commissioned by the Ulster Savings Committee to carve a sculpture celebrating the Festival of Britain. Sculptors were called to submit a design to the committee, which included the head of the Belfast School of Art, Ivor Beaumont, the Director of the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery J. A. S. Stendall, Festival architect Henry Lynch-Robinson, and the well-known painter William Conor.

The Lagan Weir, completed in 1994, is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland and crosses the River Lagan between the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the M3 cross-harbour bridge. The £14m project was jointly funded by the Laganside Corporation and the European Commission. It was designed by Ferguson and McIlveen and constructed by Charles Brand Ltd.
Usually when I visit here I can about fifteen minutes in order to get a clear view of Titania because people keep getting in my way but this visit it was very different as there were very few tourists in Belfast because of Covid-19 restrictions [I assume]
Parliament Buildings, usually referred to as Stormont because of its location in the Stormont Estate area of Belfast, is the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly, the devolved legislature for the region. The purpose built building, designed by Arnold Thornely, and constructed by Stewart & Partners, was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), in 1932.
Despite the construction of the weir the river can really stink ... it must have been really bad back in the 1980s and before.
Maugrim is a fictional character in the novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. A Narnian wolf, he is the Captain of the White Witch's Secret Police. In early American editions of the book, Lewis changed the name to Fenris Ulf (a reference to Fenrisúlfr, a wolf from Norse mythology),but when HarperCollins took over the books they took out Lewis' revisions, and the name Maugrim has been used in all editions since 1994.
This sculpture by Northern Irish artist Ross Wilson is an inspired creation based on the character of Digory Kirke, who, in the Narnia story, ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ features a wardrobe made from a beautiful apple tree which has special properties. It is through this magical wardrobe that the Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, enter Narnia and meet the talking animals and mythological creatures that populate that snowbound world. Modelled on CS Lewis as he was in 1919, the sculpture seeks in the words of the artist, to capture the “great ideas of sacrifice, redemption, victory, and freedom for the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve” that lie at the heart of the ‘Chronicles of Narnia®.'
I usually have a meal at Tedfords at least once every time I visit the city but this September [2021] when I was in Belfast they were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and I was not is a position to visit on Wednesday or Thursday which was a pity.
In June 2016, HMS Caroline was opened to the public as a museum ship and forms part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy
