TRAM STOP

TODAY I TRIED TO LOCATE THE NEW GRANGEGORMAN TRAM STOP

I could not determine the exact location of the entrance(s) to the stop but it would appear that a laneway from Marne Villas leads to the stop. Access may also be via a laneway complex running from Rathdown Road and Grangegorman Lower. The Google Map images are recent and show the current condition of the network from Broadstone to Grangegorman.

A few years ago it was announced that the bones of victims of the cholera epidemic in the 1830s were uncovered as part of preparation works for the Luas cross-city tramline at Broadstone. The Great Cholera Epidemic of 1832 killed thousands in Ireland and, due to overcrowded conditions, Dublin’s inhabitants were particularly vulnerable. In general Dubliners who perished during the outbreak were buried at Bully’s Acre beside the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. However, due to a lack of space a site between Grangegorman and Broadstone was used as an overflow burial site. About forty years later the remains were moved to a nearby walled patch of ground.

The Grangegorman Stop will serve the DIT Campus and the local community when Luas Cross City opens. It is located along the western perimeter of the Broadstone Bus Depot. The new campus is expected to have 10,000 students in Grangegorman by 2019 but over 1,000 students will be on campus for the start of tram services in December 2017.

The Broadstone – DIT Stop will have lateral platforms and be located adjacent to the Broadstone building with access from Constitution Hill. The stop will serve the existing residential population and will be a key stop in the future for students and staff accessing the planned DIT campus at Grangegorman.
