PENCIL SHAPED BOLLARDS AND THE FRANCIS STREET SCHOOL ZONE ON JOHN DILLON STREET - ST NICHOLAS PLACE - CLARENCE MANGAN SQUARE

I was photographing on Francis Street and a local suggested that I might be interested in the bollards outside Francis Street School. Even though I thought that the suggestion was a bit strange I decided to have a look. Initially I could not find the school which is not surprising as it is actually on John Dillion Street.

Lord Mayor Hazel Chu recently launched a trial at St Francis School and you can see examples in my photographs.New "school zones", demarcated by colour circles and pencil-shaped bollards , have been designed to discourage traffic and stop parents dropping off at school gates. A secondary purpose is to prevent illegal parking in the vicinity of a school.

Hazel Chu is an Irish Green Party politician and current Lord Mayor of Dublin. She is a member of Dublin City Council and is also chairperson of the Green Party, and formerly spokesperson on Enterprise. She was the first Irish-born person of Chinese descent elected to political office in Ireland [ROI].

John Dillon (4 September 1851 – 4 August 1927) was an Irish politician from Dublin, who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for over 35 years and was the last leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party. By political disposition Dillon was an advocate of Irish nationalism, originally a follower of Charles Stewart Parnell, supporting land reform and Irish Home Rule.

James Clarence Mangan, born James Mangan (1 May 1803, Dublin – 20 June 1849), was an Irish poet.
