DEAN STREET - NEWMARKET AREA

DEAN STREET DUBLIN 8

I am willing to bet that many Dubliners are unaware of the Newmarket area of Dublin 8

A planning application has been submitted for a phased programme of works to reimagine [a word that now appears in every plan that I have seen recently] the central market space as well as a number of adjoining streets and associated structures, and to create a high-quality destination in The Liberties.

During my visits in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to the area I was surprised by the amount of development that has taken place and while much work is still ongoing some projects such as Weaver Park have been completed. 10 Mill Street also known as Mill House was completed in 2017.

The opening of Teeling’s Distillery in 2015 heralded the start of a new and exciting phase of regeneration for the area, and its been quickly followed up by new developments on Mill Street including GSA’s ‘New Mill’ student housing (which also includes offices and retail as well as a restored No 10 Mill Street) and the ongoing construction of the ‘Aloft’ Hotel at Blackpitts [now operational].

A second student housing development is planned on Blackpitts, a nursing home completes the development on Mill Street, while an ambitious mixed use redevelopment of various sites around Newmarket itself is close to being unveiled. It is expected that this will include a hotel, apartments, offices, new shops and cafes and visitor attractions.
