Situated towards the northern end of the Watercourse Road, the Madden’s Buildings are probably the most distinctive terraced houses in the city. They were built in response to the dire and overcrowded living conditions in the city and its suburbs in the late 19th Century. As the first municipal housing scheme in Cork, the houses were built on the site of the old cattle, milk and potato market. The market was established in 1794 on land that had previously been the site of a guardhouse, which had protected the north entrance to the city.
THE PHOTO DIARY IS NOT LIMITED TO CORK AS I ONLY VISIT THE CITY ONCE EVERY YEAR AND 2020 MAY BE AN EXCEPTION. I AM BASED IN DUBLIN BUT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS I VISIT BELFAST, LIMERICK, GALWAY, KILKENNY AND WATERFORD AND USUALLY DEVOTE A WEEK TO PHOTOGRAPHING EACH OF THE CITIES IN QUESTION
