Construction of a 310-room hotel at this location is underway. When completed in mid-2020, the hotel will be operated by the budget hotel brand Motel One.

It is claimed that the development will transform the area, encouraging tourist footfall and general retail activity in the surrounding area.

The same developer has other ongoing projects in the immediate vicinity such as the Blue Building at 7-9 Henry Street which is a new flagship store, currently under construction, for fashion retail chain Next. There is another development with frontage on Middle Abbey Street and Williams Lane and the planning permission is for a hotel with restaurant, bar and 257 bedrooms - this development will involve the demolition of several buildings and the replacement of the top three floors of Arnotts’ car park with hotel rooms.

It should be noted that Dublin City Council has recently granted planning permission for more than 1,200 hotel and aparthotel rooms within a 175m radius of the new Motel One site shown in my photographs.

Marlet Property Group are developing a new hotel with 239 bedrooms on Abbey Street Upper and an aparthotel of some 257 units on Great Strand Street and SW3 Capital are working on a 180-bedroom hotel to replace Twilfit House on Upper Abbey Street Upper near Jervis Shopping Centre.
