THE NEWCOMEN BRIDGE COMPLEX

THE NEWCOMEN BRIDGE COMPLEX ON THE NORTH STRAND

There have been changes since I last visited the area.

The descriptions that I have found are a bit confusing but from what I can tell the road bridge is the ’North Strand Road Bridge’ but many descriptions appear to believe that this is the Newcomen Bridge but the lifting bridge is actually the Newcomen Bridge [ Irish Rail Newcomen Lifting Bridge]. This is not really important unless you are using the canal. For a detailed description and photographs please visit https://irishwaterwayshistory.com/tag/newcomen-bridge/

The following is supposed to be an official description of the Newcomen Bridge but I am assuming that it is actually a description of the North Strand Road bridge: “The bridge forms part of an important group of structures associated with the Royal Canal, begun in the late eighteenth century to provide freight and passenger transport between the rivers Liffey and Shannon. This was designed and constructed with a high level of expertise, and the quality of the masonry attests to the ambitious plans of the canal company. A functional, yet aesthetically pleasing, structure with its pointed-arch openings and moulded architrave surrounds, this bridge is contextualised by the adjacent lock and lockkeeper’s house. The bridge was named after William Gleadowe Newcomen of Newcomen’s Bank on Castle Street, Dublin, who appears to have been involved in the construction of the canal.”

NEWCOMEN BRIDGE CYCLE PROJECT

Newcomen Bridge is the single largest point of entry for cyclist over the canals and into the city centre at the morning rush hour. It serves as the main route to a wide range of areas including Fairview, Clontarf, Marino, Donnycarney, and Coolock.

Proposed Pedestrian Bridge

The purpose of the Newcomen Bridge Cycle Project is to provide improved facilities for cycling and walking along the North Strand Road by providing a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the existing Newcomen
Bridge and North Strand Road Bridge, Irish Rail over bridge OB226, at the junction of North Strand Road and Ossory Road. The bridge will form an integral element of the Fairview to Amiens Street Cycle Route, providing
separate facilities for pedestrians and hence more space for cyclists on the existing bridge.

The bridge will cross over the railway and canal to the East of the existing Newcomen Bridge and will provide an independent structure not supported from the existing Bridge. It will be a single span steel structure supported from concrete end supports. A clear span of approximately 31m will be provided reaching from Ossory Road to beyond the south west bank of the canal. The works will include alterations to the junction of North Strand Road and Ossory Road as well as ancillary services. The Bridge is being designed to meet the requirements of both Iarnród Éireann and Waterways Ireland.
