THE ROMAN CATHOLIC BURIAL GROUND OF THE CLANCY FAMILY

This is strange as one would be surprised to see Roman Catholics buried within the grounds of a Church Of Ireland Cathedral. All those buried in the grave between 1729 and 2015 bear the family name including women who married into the family but excluding daughters who married out of the family.

My understanding is that the Clancys were Abbey Fishermen. The Abbey Fishermen were so called as almost all of the fisher families lived in the St. Francis Abbey area of Limerick city. This area was once inhabited by Franciscan monks.

There are two buildings within the site included on the Record of Protected Structures. The Town Hall, Rutland Street, was built in 1805 and is currently vacant and in a state of serious disrepair. The Granary, Michael Street, is one of the earliest known multiple storey warehouses to be built in Limerick, dating from the late 1700s.

The interior was comprehensively redeveloped in the 1980s, with new offices subject to modernisation in 2015. A further eight buildings on the site are included on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). A number of these are vacant and in various stages of dereliction, despite a significant amount of remedial works undertaken by the Council in recent years to preserve their structural stability and architectural integrity.

The site is also host to the former Cahill May Roberts Building, fronting Bank Place, some existing and unused warehousing/workspace buildings at Bogue’s Yard and Watch House Lane. The southeast corner of the site currently includes a surface car park with approximately 100 No. spaces.

LIMERICK CATHEDRAL - ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL PHOTOGRAPHED 2016

LIMERICK CATHEDRAL - ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Limerick and stands at the heart of the medieval city. Originally the Royal Palace for the Kings of Thomond it was gifted to the Church in 1168. St Mary’s is an extraordinarily complex building representing developments from the mid-twelfth century to the later twentieth century – a treasure of Irish religious art.

The cathedral graveyard contains many graves and tombs of notable people. The physician Samuel Crumpe is buried in the graveyard near the great west door. Prince Milo of Montenegro, Frances Condell (first woman Mayor of Limerick) and Bishop Charles Graves are also interred in the grounds. The last High King of Munster, Domnall was purportedly buried in the cathedral, with the remnants of his stone coffin still visible in the Cathedral chancel. Bishop Cornelius O'Dea is buried alongside several other Bishops of Limerick in what is believed to be an Episcopal vault underneath the chancel itself. Also notable are the Sexton, Barrington, Boyd and Vanderkiste tombs along the south entrance pathway.

LOCK QUAY AREAALSO THE BRIDGE

LOCK QUAY AREA

The fine bridge, located at the entrance to the of the canal into the Abbey River, was restored by Limerick Civic Trust, and survives as one of the only hump-back bridges, along with Baal's Bridge to survive in Limerick City. It is of great significance in its own right and within the context of the canal lock. It marked a further advancement of the City beyond the walls. The adjacent derelict buildings to the north side, which may have operated as a lock keeper's house, and the industrial buildings to the northeast, including Russell's and the former canal brewery form a group with the bridge.

Examples of urban expression and street art photographed in Limerick during my 2016 visit to the city. In general I have been somewhat disappointed by street art in Limerick even though there can be one or two excellent examples ... maybe I am visiting the wrong parts of the city.
