PHOTOGRAPHING STREET ART CAN ATTRACT A HOSTILE REACTION

I have noticed that the aggression that I encounter while on the streets photographing has greatly increased in recent months. The other thing that I have noticed is that if I photograph something it is assumed, by a certain type of person, that I am involved or at the very least I approve.

While photographing this mural, back in September, I was verbally assaulted by a person who had very strong objections to "porno graffiti". She screamed ... "this is a protected structure" ... "why are you promoting this sort of pornography" ... "you should be arrested". There was much more most of it could not be repeated here.

A few days ago I decided to check if the building is protected and according to a list that I found online it would appear that the whole terrace is protected. And then I discovered the following: A 4-5 Grantham Street there is/was an excellent example of street art in the form of a mural titled Think & Wonder by Subset (Paradigm Arts Group Limited) who were recently summonsed to appear at Dublin District Court.

According to local media reports Dublin City Council prosecuted the artists as the mural had been painted on a protected structure and the judge fined the artists €1500 and ordered them to pay €2946 toward the council’s cost within three months.
