STILL TESTING SIGMA QUATTRO DP1 - KINGS INNS IN DUBLIN

I have a number of Sigma DP cameras and in general they were not pleasant to use until the Merrill series was introduced. I made the mistake of buying a Sigma Merrill DP3 only to discover that it was necessary to use Sigma software for RAW conversion. The software was close to unusable and battery life was so bad that it was necessary to change after about sixty images. I still use the Merrill DP3 and like the output but find the effort annoying.

When the Quattro cameras were introduced they had the same RAW problem but recently there was a firmware upgrade that allowed DNG capture. Some people claim that the DNG is not as good as the RAW files but I could not detect any real difference.

DNG is Adobe’s proprietary image standard that was created to store image data in a generic, highly-compatible format, unlike RAW files that have specific formats based on manufacturer and camera type. Although DNG was invented by Adobe and is supported in all Adobe applications, there are other camera manufacturers such as Leica, Hasselblad and Pentax that adopted this standard and use it in their cameras as their native and supported RAW file format.
