AUNTY NELLIES SWEET SHOP [GALWAY CITY]
The oldest sweet shop in the World opened in 1827.
About six or seven years ago 'traditional' sweet shops began to appear in Ireland and most of them were known as "Mr. Simm's Olde Sweet Shoppe". My first photograph of such a shop was taken in Cork [May 2011].
Since then a number of other brands began to appear and they all have one thing in common and that is they look nothing like sweet shops that existed in Ireland fifty or a hundred years ago. I am fairly sure that they did not use words such as 'Olde' or 'Shoppe' ... I suppose that one could not have expected them to use 'Old' or 'Olde' as they would have been new at the time.
Aunty Nellies first opened in Cork City in April 2011. Since then they have grown and now have multiple stores throughout Ireland, from Donegal to Wexford and Galway to Dublin.
Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe is a confectionery store chain which offers a range of boiled sweet products in Victorian-style stores. Officially opening in September 2004, there are over 150 stores open worldwide with 130 in the United Kingdom alone. In recent years, stores have opened up in Asia including three in Hong Kong.
